Guacamole Debate: Really, Mr. President?

Let me be clear from the start. I love guacamole. A lot. A ton. My husband and I make it at home, and we enjoy it at our favorite Mexican restaurants. And, I have no problem with President Obama loving guacamole, but there is a time and a place to weigh in on the guacamole debate. Debate? What debate? Let me explain.

Melissa Clark from The New York Times is a food columnist, and she recently wrote about adding green peas to guacamole and included a recipe illustrating that addition. Apparently, this recipe garnered much debate online. Peas vs. No Peas – that was the question and President Obama joined in the debate.

Mia De Graff of DailyMail.com reported that President Obama explained via Twitter on July 1, 2020 that he “respect[s] the nyt, but not buying peas in guac. onions, garlic, hot peppers. Classic.” Even Jeb Bush gave his opinion.

I have no problem with Mr. Obama giving his opinion on his favorite food and beverages, but it’s what he doesn’t comment on that gives me pause. What about Kate Steinle’s murder in San Francisco a few weeks ago? Or, for that matter, the many murders at the hands of illegal alien criminals? How about waiting days and days until he ordered the flags flown at half-staff in honor of our fallen soldiers in Chattanooga? Or his silence on the horrifying recent events uncovered at Planned Parenthood?

I understand that our federal, state and local leaders are human, and their constituents enjoy learning personal things about them (their favorite foods, favorite baseball team, etc.). I count myself in that group. However, it really bothers me that he chose to take time out of his day to inject himself into this guacamole debate while he is silent on so many other pressing issues in this country.
