To be Blunt, I regret Emily becoming an American, too

Being classy was clearly not on the citizenship test.

Actress Emily Blunt — who by all appearances seems to live the good life here in the United States — has revealed her regrets at becoming an American citizen last month.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Blunt (wife of “The Office” actor John Krasinksi) was quite, well, blunt about her feelings:

“I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?'”

She’s spent all this time in Hollywood, but can’t handle a political debate?

Okay, then. Maybe she was just talking about the Donald Trump spectacle?

Well, no.

According to The Daily Caller, Blunt has previously voiced her discontent at becoming an American:

In early September, Blunt said becoming an American was “strange and slightly disarming.”

“I’m not sure I’m entirely thrilled about it,” she said. “People ask me about the whole day. They were like, ‘Oh, it must have been so emotional.’ I was like, ‘It wasn’t! It was sad!’ I like being British.”

Presumably, a gun was being held to her head, thus forcing her to become a citizen.

“The thing that’s weird is I do get to keep both my British citizenship and this, but you have to renounce her [Queen Elizabeth II.] So, it’s kind of typically American — not to be rude — but I had to renounce her in the room but I don’t actually, technically renounce her.”

How could we possibly find you rude, Emily? Your disdain for America is simply charming.

“They were like, ‘Just say it. You don’t have to mean it, but just say it.’”

You took an oath without meaning it? Not only are you rude, you’re kind of despicable.

“It is the hardest test I ever had to take. I guarantee most Americans would have no idea how to answer any of these questions.”

Of course, the obligatory dig at how stupid we Americans are.

And … maybe she’s right? Maybe we are stupid for opening our doors to silly ingrates like her, who are willing to take our money with one hand, while thumbing her nose at us with the other.

But we’re also an extremely generous nation. Our men and women are willing to lay down their lives so nimrods like Emily Blunt can become an American citizen and oh-so-glibly have the freedom to deride it.

I can’t help but wonder what her husband thinks of her looking down her regal nose at the US? He is, after all, portraying “Jack” in the upcoming “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi” — a film about the private security contractors who risked their lives in order to save State Department staff at the Diplomatic Compound in Benghazi.

What a weird dichotomy for him, knowing the sacrifices those men made during the bloody seige of September 2012, but being married to a woman who disdains the principles that drove those men to be heroes.

But there’s one thing on which Emily and I do agree: If these are her true feelings, then I, too, regret her becoming an American citizen.
