Elizabeth Warren Was the Winner in Last Week’s Democrat Presidential Debate
We have all read the articles and seen the polls regarding last week’s Democrat Debate in Las Vegas. Some pundits say Bernie Sanders absolutely came out on top. Others claim Hillary Clinton won the debate, with an assist from Bernie. But the real winner was the ‘Warren Wing’ of the Democrat Party. That’s right, Elizabeth Warren and the Populist Movement were the real winners.
Much like the TEA Party has fundamentally changed the conversation within the Republican Party, the ‘New Populist Movement,’ or ‘Warren Wing,’ is shaping the conversation within the Democrat Party. As a result of this shift, as evidenced in the last debate, we are seeing Democrat Presidential candidates moving farther and farther to the left.
Bernie Sanders came out of the gate on the far left. Immediately championing many of Elizabeth Warren’s signature battles, such as reining in Wall Street, reducing student loan debt, making college free, wanting businesses to share more of their profits with workers in order to rid America of income inequality, and a minimum wage increase, Bernie garnered support among the ‘New Populist Movement.’ So, where exactly did that leave Hillary Clinton?
As shown in the debate, Hillary slightly abandoned her Wall Street buddies by declaring that the excesses of Wall Street and capitalism needed to be reined in so that the income gap between the rich and poor would be reduced, thus creating income equality. She also took up the banner of free college tuition and raising the minimum wage. This, however, did not give her a bump in her poll numbers after the debate. Instead, she was only able to maintain and not lose any ground to Sanders.
Just as the TEA Party doesn’t feel the Republicans have done enough to move the country back to the right, the ‘Warren Wing’ doesn’t think the Democrats have moved the country far enough to the left. And since Warren has steadfastly refused to run for President, they are desperate for a Presidential candidate they can get behind. So the candidates have to move farther left or risk losing those voters. To not move to the left, candidates leave the door open for another candidate, possibly an Independent that the ‘Warren Wing’ could rally behind.
Whether you think Bernie Sanders won the debate or Hillary, the truth is…Elizabeth Warren and the ‘Warren Wing’ are the true winners. Elizabeth Warren may not be running for President, but she is definitely making an impact on the race by forcing the candidates to address the issues she has been championing for the last two years and therefore, she wins.
